Athens & Epidaurus Festival

SuperTitles has worked with the Athens & Epidaurus Festival in 2006–2008, 2012, and continuously from 2016 through 2026. A summer is roughly 30 to 40 events in two months. Peak days run five to seven performances at once. About 70% are premieres: no recording to work from, and the final text often two or three days before the general rehearsal.

For every production we prepare the original-language titles — line breaks, pace, a file an operator can recover from. Every performance is surtitled in Greek and English. The festival’s translators supply the second language; we match it to the prepared original so both tracks stay with the show.

Our operators cue every performance. A typical event has one rehearsal and two to five shows. Festival days are a sequence of opening nights, not one production repeated.

We take part in the technical analysis of each event — projectors, LED, booth, sightlines — so the titles reach the house. At Epidaurus the geometry is known; the work is that directors trust the line will not expose them, and that the operator can follow when the stage leaves the page.

The work is built so that a late text and a live stage still have a file an operator can follow. Productions we meet there often ask us back on their own work, outside the festival calendar.
